How to Block Your Number When You Call (*67 and Phone Settings)
Date Published
To block your number on a call, dial *67 and then the phone number you are calling. Your caller ID shows as No Caller ID, Private or Blocked on their screen. For every call, turn off Show My Caller ID in your phone's settings: Settings > Apps > Phone on iPhone (iOS 18 and later), or the Phone app's Settings on Android. Worth knowing it works both ways: if a withheld number keeps calling you, a Deepscanner search can identify the carrier and line type behind it in about 60 seconds, free and with no card.
- One call: dial *67, then the full number
- All calls on iPhone: Settings > Apps > Phone > Show My Caller ID > off (iOS 17 and earlier: Settings > Phone)
- All calls on Android: Phone > three dots > Settings > Supplementary services or Calls > Caller ID > Hide number
- Undo one call: dial *82 before the number to show your number again
- Does not work on: toll-free numbers and emergency calls, which can still see who is calling
Hiding your own number is a privacy choice. The flip side is that the unknown calls you receive may come from people who did exactly the same thing. If your phone keeps ringing with numbers you do not know, a free reverse phone lookup shows the carrier, line type and general location in about 60 seconds when a number does show up.
How do I block my number with *67?
*67 is the quickest method and needs no settings. It works on any US phone, mobile or landline, and it only applies to the call you are placing.
- Open the keypad. Do not call from a saved contact, because the code has to come first.
- Type *67, then the full number with area code, with no spaces in between.
- Press call. The person sees No Caller ID, Private or Blocked.
Because it is per call, you have to repeat it each time. To save a contact that always hides your number, store it with *67 at the front, for example *675551234567. Check this once with a friend before you rely on it.
How do I hide my caller ID on iPhone for every call?
Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Show My Caller ID on iOS 18 and later, and turn the switch off. On iOS 17 and earlier the path is Settings > Phone > Show My Caller ID. From then on, your number is hidden on all outgoing calls.
Some carriers do not support this switch. If it is greyed out or has no effect, your carrier is not passing the setting along. In that case, use *67 on each call, or ask your carrier to turn on caller ID blocking for your line.
How do I hide my number on Android?
The menu name changes by manufacturer, so look for the same idea. On a Google Pixel and most Android phones, open the Phone app, tap the three dots, then Settings. Look for Calls, then Additional settings or Supplementary services, then Caller ID, and choose Hide number.

Per-call, per-device and carrier-level options compared.
On Samsung, the path is Phone > three dots > Settings > Supplementary services > Show my caller ID, then choose Hide number. If you do not see these labels, search the Settings screen for caller ID.
Getting calls from numbers you cannot place? Put the number in and see the carrier, line type and general location free in about 60 seconds. No card, and the person is never notified.
What does the other person see when I block my number?
They see a label instead of your number. The wording depends on their carrier and phone: No Caller ID, Private Number, Blocked or Unknown are all common.
- Their screen: a generic label, not your digits
- Their call log: the call is logged without a number
- Voicemail: they may hear your message, but cannot call you back from the log
- Their phone settings: if they use Silence Unknown Callers, the call may go straight to voicemail
That last point matters if you want your call answered. Many people will not pick up a hidden number. Our guide on No Caller ID calls explains why they get ignored, and why recipients treat them with suspicion.
Is it legal to block your caller ID?
Hiding your number is legal for normal private calls, and carriers built *67 for exactly this. What is not legal is using it to harass, threaten or defraud someone. For ordinary privacy, such as calling a landlord or a seller you have just met, it is fine.
Can I block my number on a landline?
Yes. *67 works the same way on most landlines: pick up the handset, dial *67, then the number. For a permanent setting, ask your phone provider to block caller ID on the line. Some providers offer it as a switch in your online account, and others only by phone.
Does hiding my caller ID hide me from people-search sites?
No. Caller ID blocking only changes what the person you call sees on their screen. It does not remove your name or number from the public records that people-search tools draw on, and it does not change what a search of your number would return. If you want to know what is findable about a number, you can run one yourself and see exactly what a stranger would see.
That check takes about 60 seconds for the free preview on Deepscanner, and the search itself is never reported to the person you looked up.
Should I use *67 or the phone setting?

When to use *67 and when to change the setting permanently.
Use *67 when you only need privacy now and then, such as calling a seller or booking an appointment. Use the phone setting when you want every outgoing call hidden and do not want to remember a code.
Method | Covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
*67 | One call | Occasional privacy |
Phone setting | Every outgoing call | Always-on privacy |
Carrier request | Every call on the line | Phones where the switch is greyed out |
Whichever you pick, test it by calling a friend and asking what shows on their screen. It takes a minute and confirms your carrier honours the setting.
Why might *67 not work?
- Toll-free numbers (800, 888 and similar) can still see the caller. This is how they work.
- Emergency calls always show your number.
- Some carriers or business phone systems ignore or reject blocked calls.
- The other person may use Anonymous Call Rejection, a carrier feature that refuses calls from hidden numbers.
If the call does not connect, hang up and call again without *67, or text instead. Texts do not use caller ID blocking, so *67 does nothing for messages.

What should I do about the numbers that call me?
Hiding your number protects you when you call. It does nothing for the calls you receive. When an unknown number shows up on your screen, the first step is to find out who it is, and the second is to decide whether to block it. Our walkthrough on how to block a number on iPhone covers the second step.
For the first step, Deepscanner searches 500M+ records from 100+ sources. The free preview gives the carrier and line type in about 60 seconds. The full report takes about 2 minutes. You can also search by name or email. The person is never notified, you can cancel in one click, and you can request a 100% refund within 30 days if a search finds nothing.
When the call comes from a hidden number, there is no number to search. Our page on unknown callers explains what you can still do, such as checking voicemail and your carrier's call log.
