Unknown Caller: What It Means and How to Find Out Who
Date Published

An unknown caller is a call whose number or name your phone cannot show, and you can often still find out who it was. If a number appears on your screen or call log, a reverse phone lookup can show the carrier, line type and location, and often the owner. If the screen shows no number at all, nobody can unmask it from your end.
- Meaning: your phone has no name for the caller, or no number at all
- Number shown: look it up and you can usually learn who is behind it
- Number hidden: see our No Caller ID guide for what works
- Best habit: let it go to voicemail, then check the number
- Private: the person is never notified when you look them up

What does "unknown caller" mean?
"Unknown caller" means your phone has no contact name to show for the call. It does not always mean the number is hidden. Three different things get the same label, and they need different next steps.
What you see | What it means | Can you trace it? |
|---|---|---|
A number, no name | Caller is not in your contacts | Yes, look the number up |
"Unknown" or "Unknown caller" and no number | The carrier did not pass the number on | Rarely, from your end |
"Spam Likely" or "Scam Likely" | Your carrier or phone flagged it | Yes, if a number shows |
The first row is by far the most common, and it is the one you can solve.
Is an unknown caller the same as No Caller ID?
Not quite. "No Caller ID" means the caller blocked or withheld the number, while "unknown caller" is a broader label that also covers numbers simply missing from your contacts. Phones and carriers use the two terms loosely, so the same call can show up as either one. If your screen shows no digits at all, read No Caller ID calls: who makes them for the options that do work.

Is there any way to figure out who an unknown caller is?
Yes, when you have the number. Work through these in order and stop when one answers it.
- Check your call log. Many "unknown" calls still leave a number there, even when the ringing screen showed nothing.
- Check voicemail and texts. A real caller usually leaves a name or a reason.
- Search the number in quotes. Businesses and complaint forums often list the digits.
- Run a reverse phone lookup. Deepscanner shows the carrier, line type and location free, then the owner's name and other contact details in the full report.
A lookup works on mobile, landline and VoIP numbers. It cannot trace a call from a number that was never shown to you.
Why can't I call back an unknown caller?
You usually cannot call back because there is no number to dial, or because the number was spoofed. If your call log shows no digits, the caller withheld it. If it shows digits but the call fails, the number may be fake or disconnected, and scammers often fake local numbers on purpose. A lookup that shows a VoIP line in another state is a strong sign the number was spoofed. For more on this, see how to tell if a phone number is a scam.
Should you answer an unknown caller?
No, not by default. Let it go to voicemail and look the number up first. Whitepages says that answering a spam call tells scammers your line is active, which can lead to more calls (Whitepages, 28 Oct 2026). A real caller will leave a message. A robocall will not.
- Expecting a call? A doctor, delivery driver or recruiter may call from a number you do not know. Check voicemail.
- Repeat calls? Same number again and again with no message is a strong spam sign.
- Asks for money or codes? Hang up and call the company back on a number you already know is real.

How do you silence or block unknown callers?
Use your phone's own setting first, then add a carrier tool. On iPhone, the setting is called Silence Unknown Callers and lives in the Phone section of Settings. On Android, open the Phone app and look in its call or spam settings. Calls from numbers outside your contacts then go to voicemail.
Carriers also offer free filters. Whitepages names AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter and T-Mobile Scam Shield, and it points to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov (28 Oct 2026). Silencing is risky if you wait for calls from new numbers, so check voicemail daily.
Blocking one number only stops that number. Spammers rotate numbers, so identify the pattern with a lookup before you block.
What can a lookup tell you about an unknown caller?
A free preview shows the carrier, line type and location. The full report can add the owner's name, age, other phone numbers, emails, current and past addresses, relatives and social profiles. Deepscanner scans public records, social networks and the web, searching by phone number, name or email. Results depend on what is public, so a new prepaid or VoIP number may show only the carrier and area.
